Shibori Dye Workshop

(2 sessions)

High School – Adult |

Beginner- Intermediate

Instructor: Juliette Montague

Saturdays, March 16th & March 23rd

10:00am – 2:00pm

Learn the fascinating art of shibori dyeing! In this workshop, explore shibori from many angles; you’ll learn several different shibori techniques and dye a few things from napkins and tea towels to aprons and t-shirts. What is shibori? It’s a Japanese dyeing technique that typically involves folding, twisting or bunching cloth and binding it, then dyeing it in indigo. Whatever is used to bind the fabric will resist the dye, resulting in areas of the cloth that take the distinctive blue dye in patterns created by the resistance, and other areas of the cloth that remain white. Shibori is a very vast technique and there are tons of ways to do it (and a truly infinite number of patterns you can create), and in this class you’ll get an in-depth look at several of them. The workshop will begin with a demonstration of basic shibori and an overview of some of the patterns you can create. Then, you’ll dye a dinner napkin to try your hand and get a feel for the technique. Once you start to get the hang of things, you’ll put your knowledge to work as you dye 2-3 of your own items.  Items to dye must be 100% cotton, silk, or other natural fiber, white, and should be small- or medium-sized items. Ideal items include t-shirts, silk scarves, tanks, leggings, napkins, canvas tote bags, dish towels, pillow cases, etc. Please do not bring large items like curtains or bed sheets, as there will not be enough space to accommodate large pieces. Old items with stains are ideal, as the stains can be covered with dye!  Shibori dyeing is truly an amazing craft, as every piece you dye is a little bit of a mystery. You will love the process of folding fabric, dyeing it, then unfolding it to reveal the organic results. Join up for an amazing afternoon of shibori magic!

The Unexpected Love Story: A Workshop (6 sessions)

Adult | Beginner – Intermediate

Instructor: Thao Thai

Thursdays, January 18 – February 29 (no class 2/15)

7:00pm-8:00pm

What makes for a memorable love story? Is it the characters? The narrative voice? The dialogue? We’re all familiar with the love stories that fit inside a tidy formula, but what about the more difficult ones about love lost, love unrequited, or simply, love that exists on the periphery of common depictions? There is a place—and a need—for stories that reexamine our very definition of love and the way it’s explored in the written word. In this writing workshop, we’ll dive into the nuance of short-form writing by workshopping our stories and examining the craft choices behind each. We’ll read examples of published fictional and nonfiction love stories that challenge us to think more deeply about the tenderness and violence within relationships. In the end, writers will walk away with either a creative nonfiction essay or a short piece of fiction that presents their version of an unexpected love story.

This course explores mixed-media collage as an art form. The activity of creating collage includes appropriation, assemblage, drawing, painting, and craftsmanship. Students will develop an artistic vision in assembling collages. In producing collage, the artist must include/exclude, balance/imbalance, configure/reconfigure, and imaginatively enhance the various visual components of the work. Drawing and painting are equally important parts of this process. Students will collect in their Field Journal a myriad of visual data including sketches, photos, patterns, etc. These fragments of visual information will be crafted together with drawing and painting to produce collages descriptive of the artists own life through a two-week project titled the “You Album”.
