2025 WI/SPR Saturday Morning Musicals at McConnell Arts Center (MAC)
Join us at the McConnell Arts Center where we will spend 14 Saturday mornings developing life-long skills through theatre: creative collaboration, teamwork, speaking to audiences, critical thinking and more! As a theatre team, our cast will adapt or write their own script, experience what it is like to audition for roles, understand aspects of costume and set design, all culminating to a final performance on the last day!
Dates: January 18 – April 26, 2025
Times: 9 am – 12 pm

Performance Day: Saturday, April 26 @ 11:00am
All tuition sales are final unless minimum enrollment is not reached, in which case refunds will be issued.
Health and Safety: Standard COVID-19 policy will be followed. Subject to change due to The Contemporary Theatre of Ohio, Columbus Public Health, and/or CDC advisory. Masks are required to be worn for the entirety of all classes covering the mouth and nose. Depending on the safety requirements at the time, students may perform without wearing masks unless a parent/guardian requires the mask to be worn during performances.

BalletMet Classes
BalletMet Academy classes at the MAC will start Tuesday, September 3.
Enhance your child’s concentration, coordination and creativity with BalletMet. Their children’s classes are specially designed for young dancers ages 3 to 7 who are eager to learn in a fun and nurturing environment.
Most classes run from September to May, but new students are always welcome to join at any time. The schedule for Children’s Division classes at the MAC is as follows:

Develops creativity and coordination with a focus on rhythm, movement, music, imagination and fun.

Curious about abstract art? In this class, we’ll explore the world of abstract painting–art that doesn’t look like real life. Are you ready for the traditional way of watercolor? We are going to learn, improve, and understand the ratios of pigment/water, the use of layering of different hues, and how they mix and complement each other. During the weeks of this term we will study still life, human figures, and the landscape from direct observation. You’ll leave with a deeper understanding of wet on dry, wet on wet, and other watercolor techniques. Beginners welcomed.

This fun and creative course will offer students an introductory experience to the world of printmaking. This versatile art form allows you the ability to make multiple copies of variations of an image, using many different styles and mediums. In this 8-week class we will create low relief sculptural tiles. From floral design, to abstract, to figurative, we will bring your imagination to life in clay. Large Scale Painting (8 sessions)

This 8-week studio class will cover painting in large scale from start to finish. We will complete one (or two!) large paintings over the eight-week period. Each class begins with a painting demonstration advancing the painting into the next step. After demonstration students continue to work on their own large-scale painting with individual instruction. Students will develop control and build confidence in working large. Large scale is defined by the size of your vehicle and your ambition. 30”x40” is recommended but any size will work. Students will paint from their own photographs. Oil or acrylic painters are welcome. All instructor demonstrations will be done in oil.

In this class we will study the spectrum of painting processes. We will cover indirect painting, learning how to make an underpainting and apply glazes like the old masters, building a painting in many layers. And to conclude the class we will learn how to combine these processes and apply glazes to a direct painting.

In this class, students will create a photo gallery bound inside a journal with accompanying written meditations. Photos can be still life, landscape, street life, night photography, architecture, etc. The class will narrate 10 to 12 final images with prose passages prompted by visual cues within the photography, including time for group workshopping. The finished product is a gallery-journal that commemorates our photo journey in the natural and urban environment, mixing the familiar and the surprising situations in which we live. Students print a selection of images each week (two to three) and bind them into a durable paper-bound book. A digital camera or mobile camera phone work for this class (Instructor uses an iPhone 13). Participants will download Snapseed photo editing software, and students will need time enough to take a couple hours between class meetings to shoot photos, make initial edits and compose writing.

In this fun and short three-week class, we will read, write and ponder some great and terrible love poems. Revisiting childhood memories, reading the works of others and looking closely at ‘cliches’ of writing about love, this class will be a light-hearted introduction to poetry writing especially to “non-writers.’’

Simplified Forms (8 sessions)

Translating your ideas into your chosen material simply requires skill, an understanding of the materials you are working with, focus, and patience with yourself. In this class, students will learn through instructor lectures, documentaries, pre-recorded demonstrations available to students in and out of class time, and time to work on your projects in class. The pre-recorded demonstrations will include watercolor, gouache, soft pastel, and oil painting in a direct method. There will be weekly presentations of contemporary and historical artists that approached simplification in their work and other styles of art as well. Students have the option of receiving an assignment or choosing a self-driven project. For those who would like to participate, the instructor will also provide individual critiques and group critiques.

Are you interested in pursuing a career in fashion? As an author and Certified Personal Stylist, Courtney Stone Smith believes that personal styling is the best place to begin. In her class, students will not only learn about interpersonal skills, but also gain insights into what it takes to become a professional stylist in the fashion industry. Whether you wish to work in editorial styling or work independently, it all begins with the fundamentals taught in this class. Courtney will guide students in creating impactful style boards, teach them how to effectively communicate with people, assign style tasks to complete, and ultimately provide them with a better understanding of what it truly takes to make it in this competitive field. So, if you’ve been told that you have an eye for style, are interested in personal styling, or looking to excel in the fashion industry, this introductory class is just for you.

Youth Paper Quilling

Elevate your paper quilling skills. Learn to shape stripes of paper into coils or other shapes that are then arranged on a flat surface to form a design or picture. This beginner’s- level class for young kids, led by instructor Chayanica Choudhury, is the perfect way for elementary school students to create art with paper quilling. Paper quilling projects can be used to decorate
cards, boxes, gift bags, picture frames, or even be made into 3D stand-alone art pieces.

Zentangle Art with Depth and Movement (8 sessions)

Take your doodling skills to a new level. By unlocking a few simple techniques, you will learn how to create impressive movement and depth that take simple drawings into frameable works of art using just a pen and paper. This class is for all levels but it if you have unsteady or shaky hands, this art style may be more challenging.
