Family Colors

Family Colors is a celebration of the work of Betsy DeFusco and Derek DeFusco. A collaborative exhibition between mother and son, Family Colors showcases the influence that family connection can have on art.

“It has been so exciting to watch Derek’s art develop over time, and I feel fortunate to have maybe played a small part in encouraging him to keep going. What is great is that Derek’s pieces really do represent his sweet personality and style. He works at Open Arms Health Systems, and the teachers there have been very encouraging and helpful as he has worked at drawing and breaking down colors and shapes to form a certain animal, or structure. His way of using different sections of color goes back many years, when he was younger and went to Clay Cafe to paint on china plates. The folks at Open Arms have shown him how successful one can be when you work at something everyday.

I am grateful to have this opportunity to show my work alongside Derek’s in our show.” -Betsy DeFusco

“I am happy to show my drawings at the McConnell Arts Center. It is the first time my work will be shown in a real gallery. Also I am happy to be showing it with my mom, Betsy.

I love my job at Open Arms. I go there everyday to make art and see all my friends. I am trying new paints, like watercolor and acrylic, and working on my drawing.

Thanks for having me in this show, Family Colors.” -Derek DeFusco
