Worthington Chamber Orchestra – An Evening with Beethoven: Septet in E-flat major, op. 20
Since its premiere in 1800, Ludwig van Beethoven's Septet in E-flat major has held a special place in the chamber music canon. It was written during the second half of the 18th century when the aristocracy and the middle class used serenades and divertimentos as light entertainment at social gatherings. The charming six-movement work was written for four strings and three wind instruments, and due to its popularity, Beethoven arranged the work for other instrumental combinations. It was so popular that, to Beethoven's dismay and displeasure, it overshadowed compositions he held in higher regard. Even today, the work remains, arguably, the finest septet ever written.
