Karen Eckenroth – A Survey of Women in Music

Do you know who Hildegard was? How about Francesca Caccini, Clara Schumann, Ethel Smyth, Amy Beach, or Libby Larsen? What contributions did these women, and others like them, make to the advancement and growth of musical styles and characteristics. More importantly, how did those contributions and sacrifices pave the way for the success of contemporary artists like Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Pink, Adele, and Rihanna? This course is a survey of the history of women’s contributions to the world of music.
