Paul Beck – 2024 Election Post-Mortem
This class will review the results of the 2024 elections for president and down ballot. It will analyze exit poll data to show what demographic and other groups were most divided in their presidential voting. It will discuss the consequences of the election for domestic and foreign policy, the composition and directions of the Executive Branch, and the balance of power between the Executive Branch and the Congress. Finally, it will speculate about the electoral climate for 2026.
About Paul Beck
Paul A. Beck (1971 PhD, University of Michigan) is Professor Emeritus and Academy Professor of Political Science at The Ohio State University and international co-coordinator of the Comparative National Elections Project (u.osu.edu/cnep), which now includes over 70 national election surveys in 31 different countries. Most recently, he co-directed multiple surveys of voters for: Britain and France in 2017; the U.S. in 2020 and 2024, and Brazil in 2022. Beck has published 9 books and numerous articles in leading professional journals, has received 5 research grants from the National Science Foundation, and has been a regular commentator on politics. He is recipient of the Distinguished Scholar and Distinguished Service awards from Ohio State University and the American Political Science Association’s Goodnow and Eldersveld awards for distinguished service to the profession and career professional contributions to the field of political organizations and parties, respectively. He served as political science department chair for 19 years at two different universities and as dean of Social and Behavioral Sciences at Ohio State.
