McConnell Arts Center to Host Old Fashioned Christmas Sing-Along
December 2, 2011WORTHINGTON, Ohio– The Peggy R. McConnell Arts Center and jazz pianist Bradley Sowash will host by an old fashioned Christmas featuring a holiday sing-along on Sunday, Dec. 18, at 6 p.m.
The event is free and open to the public.
Sowash and his wife Susan Hadley have hosted a Christmas sing-along around the piano at their home for 15 years. However, their guest list grew each year until their home could no longer accommodate the crowd. They decided to share the event with the entire community and moved it to the McConnell Arts Center.
“We thought this was a great way to share the spirit of the holiday with the entire community,” Sowash said. “We started singing jazzy carols around the piano with our friends and their elementary school-aged kids around 1996 and it quickly became a holiday tradition. As our growing kids began bringing their friends, eventual dates and college roommates, our guest list has grown larger and larger.”
With Sowash at the piano, the evening takes on an “open mic” feel. Participants are welcome to bring music, poems or their own musical instruments to join in the fun.
Participants can bring a dish or holiday treat to share. Canned goods will be accepted to benefit the Worthington Food Pantry.
Sowash earned a bachelor’s degree in music composition from The Ohio State University and is a distinguished concert jazz pianist and composer. He has recorded nine CD’s, and is an author/educator specializing in improvisation. His broadcast credits include National Public Radio and he has been a frequent guest on the PBS-TV series, The Piano Guy, for seven seasons.
“This should be a great night at the MAC,” said executive director Jon Cook. “It will be a real treat for folks to stop by and connect with a talented artist like Bradley play in a very casual setting.”
